10,000 STRONG VETERANS CAREER SUMMIT

This was the official website for the 2015 10,000 Strong Veterans Career Summit . The summit gave veterans from around Southern California the opportunity to network with career and business expert, develop proposals for entrepreneurial projects and compete for government contracts. The content below is from the site's 2015 archived pages.

The company I work for manages several NYC based carpet cleaning businesses serving the tri-state area. These businesses are labor intensive in that most carpets and rugs need to be prepped for transport, meaning that first furniture has to be moved off, then the carpet rolled and carried to the trucks. Then there is the handling of our cleaning equipment, either on location, or at our facility. We were informed that many of the vets attending this summit would be from our area and that the event would be a recruiting opportunity for our firm. I was sent to the 10,000 Strong Veterans Career Summit as a potential employer. I must have met and interviewed a couple hundred veterans who were on their way back home to the NY area. Many were eager to learn the ins and outs of our carpet cleaning business in NYC and were gung ho to start work. I thought the concept and execution of the summit was excellent. We actually ended up hiring several people. If there is a 2016 summit, I am sure that we will be back.

VETERANS CAREER SUMMIT

Empowering Service Members, Veterans and Military Families with Opportunities to Lead and Thrive in Our Communities

Led by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, "10,000 Strong" is a coalition of over 100 companies and 50 community organizations who are united around a common goal of hiring 10,000 local veterans by 2017. The initiative is a comprehensive approach that helps companies hire veterans, assists veterans to access career services and raises awareness of the skill sets veterans bring to the workforce.

While the goal was to enlist local companies that could provide jobs and placement opportunities, we also want to mention the gracious efforts of one sponsor who supported this effort even though they could not directly offer jobs. A New Orleans maritime legal practice, OffshoreInjuryLouisiana.com, provided publicity support and pro bono legal advice to the organizers. They also contributed personnel to man phone lines during the summit. Many of our vets come from the New Orleans area, and we're very grateful for the local generosity of this socially conscious law firm.
